Mayor Eric Adams Visits JCCGCI Jay Harama Older Adult Center

Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney (JCCGCI) was pleased to welcome Mayor Eric Adams to our Jay Harama Older Adult Center (OAC), located in Sheepshead Bay. Jay-Harama Older Adult Center is one of the eight Older Adult Centers operated by JCCGCI throughout Brooklyn.
During this visit, Mayor Adams joined more than a dozen older adults participating in JCCGCI’s ethnic-specific Geriatric Wellness Group (in this case geared for Asian-American older adults). Facilitated by NYC Aging, JCCGCI, and Weill-Cornell Medicine, the Group meets weekly and offers older adults the opportunity to interact with peers and a mental health clinician on wellness topics in a culturally sensitive atmosphere.
Mayor Adams spoke to the gathered older adults about his work to ensure that they have robust resources available to them. He also took some time to converse with JCCGCI Executive Director Rabbi Moshe Wiener, as well as JCCGCI Supervising Older Adult Center Director Grace Brandi and Jay Harama OAC Director Rachel Lutsker about the ongoing needs of the center, to continue to serve New York City’s older adult population.
JCCGCI’s Jay Harama OAC serves nearly 1,500 clients annually, across several programs. Besides nutritious, freshly cooked breakfast and lunch meals, clients are provided access to arts and culture programming, including music, painting, beading, crocheting, sketching, and jewelry making. Jay Harama OAC also offers physical health and exercise classes, including aerobics, dancing, ballroom dancing, and tai chi. Clients are also provided with ESL training in both Russian and Chinese languages.
Rabbi Moshe Wiener, Executive Director of JCCGCI said, “It was an honor to welcome Mayor Eric Adams to Jay Harama OAC, and introduce him to the intensive, professional services that we provide to our clients. Mayor Adams has demonstrated his fierce commitment to New York City’s older adults, and his ongoing advocacy on their behalf. We are grateful to Mayor Adams and his team, as well as the leadership of NYC Aging, guided by its dynamic and highly accomplished Commissioner Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez (represented at this visit by Associate Commissioner Jocelyn Groden), for their visit, and continued support.”
Grace Brandi, Supervising Senior Center Director of JCCGCI said, “Our older adult clients were so grateful for the opportunity to thank Mayor Adams in person for championing so many causes that benefit their lives and community. Our older adults continue to gain from his many initiatives, including tablet distribution for digital access, the creation of an Older Adult Cabinet for cross-agency coordination, and a focus on senior housing. It was such a pleasure to greet Mayor Adams, and we look forward to future opportunities for collaboration.”
