TESTED BY WATER: JCCGCI RETURNS HOME FOLLOWING FLOOD RECOVERY

A few months ago, the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island (JCCGCI) faced an unexpected challenge when a ruptured sprinkler pipe on the top floor of our headquarters in Coney Island released massive amounts of water throughout the building, causing extensive damage and forcing the temporary closure of our facility.

Water affected multiple floors of the building, damaging ceilings, walls, flooring, furniture, equipment, and critical infrastructure. The closure disrupted operations for numerous programs, including our Coney Island Seaside Older Adult Center, which serves approximately 800 older adults each month, and a daycare center serving approximately 100 children and their families. The damage required extensive repairs and temporarily displaced dozens of staff members, creating significant operational challenges across the organization.

Yet amid the disruption, what emerged most powerfully was the dedication, resilience, and compassion of the JCCGCI family.

Within hours of the flood, staff members from across the organization mobilized to ensure continuity of services for the thousands of individuals who depend on JCCGCI every day. Approximately 75 staff members were displaced from their normal workspaces, yet continued serving clients with remarkable determination and professionalism. Teams worked tirelessly to relocate programs, identify temporary workspaces, safeguard sensitive materials, and maintain uninterrupted support for older adults, Holocaust survivors, families, job seekers, and community members throughout New York City.

Programs adapted quickly, leveraging other JCCGCI locations and creative solutions to ensure that no vulnerable individual was left without support. Despite the challenges posed by the building’s closure, our commitment to the community never wavered. As recovery efforts moved forward, the support and dedication of numerous individuals proved instrumental in helping JCCGCI navigate this challenging period and return to normal operations.

We are especially and profoundly grateful to Mr. Michael Barr, CPA, representing the building owners, who, from the earliest moments following the flood, was extraordinarily responsive and did everything possible to expedite the repair process and facilitate the safe return of staff, participants, and programming to our headquarters.

We likewise extend our sincere appreciation to JCCGCI’s Office Management team, led by Inna Karalitskiy and assisted by Michelle Jakob; JCCGCI Chief Financial Officer Elizabeth Healy; Building Manager Wilfredo Soto; Albert Perez; and JCCGCI’s Supervising Older Adult Center Director Grace Brandi and her dedicated team. Throughout the recovery process, these individuals worked tirelessly, often under difficult conditions, to coordinate with insurance adjusters, contractors, and repair crews, ensuring that restoration efforts moved forward as quickly and efficiently as possible. Their unwavering commitment, professionalism, and willingness to go above and beyond played an essential role in bringing our staff and services back home.

Today, we are pleased to share that JCCGCI’s headquarters has reopened and our staff have returned home. While restoration and recovery efforts required months of planning, coordination, and hard work, we are grateful to once again welcome staff, program participants, and community members back into our building.

Equally exciting is the reopening of JCCGCI’s Coney Island Seaside Innovative Older Adult Center, which once again welcomes older adults through its doors for meals, socialization, educational programming, fitness activities, and meaningful community engagement. For many participants, the center serves as far more than a gathering place- it is a lifeline that fosters connection, combats isolation, and promotes healthy aging.

Throughout the temporary closure, staff worked tirelessly to ensure that older adults remained connected to critical services and supports. The return to the center represents a significant milestone for the hundreds of participants who rely on its programs and look forward to the friendships, activities, and sense of community it provides each day.

Walking through the building today serves as a powerful reminder of what makes JCCGCI special. Offices, meeting spaces, and community areas that once sat empty during the recovery process are once again filled with activity and the people we are privileged to serve. The reopening is not simply about a building, it is about restoring a vital community hub that touches thousands of lives every year.

This milestone would not have been possible without the extraordinary efforts of our employees, contractors, vendors, board members, supporters, and community partners. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped us navigate this challenging chapter and move forward stronger than before. Their dedication, flexibility, and willingness to step forward when needed exemplify the very best of the JCCGCI community.

Although we have made tremendous progress, the financial impact of the flood continues to be felt. While insurance has covered a portion of the damages, significant recovery-related expenses, operational disruptions, emergency response measures, and restoration costs were not fully reimbursed. These unexpected expenses created substantial financial burdens as we worked to restore our facility while ensuring that services to our clients continued uninterrupted.

“Moments such as these remind us of the strength and resilience of our organization,” said Rabbi Moshe Wiener, Executive Director of JCCGCI. “Thanks to the dedication of our staff and the support of our partners and community, we were able to overcome a significant challenge while continuing to serve those who depend on us. We are grateful to be back in our headquarters and even more grateful for the people who helped us get here.”

The reopening of our headquarters and Older Adult Center marks the beginning of a new chapter. While the flood tested our organization in unexpected ways, it also highlighted the strength of our staff, the loyalty of our supporters, and the resilience of the community we serve. We celebrate not only the restoration of our facility, but the collective effort that made that restoration possible.

As we look ahead, we remain focused on our mission and deeply appreciative of the support that carried us through this difficult period. Together, we turned a crisis into a testament to the resilience, determination, and spirit of the JCCGCI community. While challenges remain, we are stronger because of the people who stood beside us, and we look forward to continuing our work from our restored home for many years to come.
