BUILDING FUTURES, RESTORING CONFIDENCE: JCCGCI’S CROWN HEIGHTS MESIVTA VOCATIONAL TRACK IS TRANSFORMING LIVES

Sometimes, the most meaningful success stories cannot be measured solely through statistics or reports. They are found in renewed confidence, restored purpose, and young people discovering strengths they never knew they possessed.

That is exactly what is happening through the Crown Heights Mesivta Vocational Track, an innovative initiative of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island (JCCGCI), developed in partnership with the Yeshivos of Crown Heights.

Following years of careful planning, consultation, and fundraising, the program launched after Tishrei and is already making a profound impact on students throughout the community. Designed to provide hands-on vocational training within a Torah environment, the program currently offers instruction in carpentry, with plans to expand into plumbing, low-voltage electrical work, welding, and other practical trades.

While students are learning valuable technical skills, the true impact extends far beyond the workshop.

For many participants, the program has become a place where confidence is built alongside projects. Boys who once struggled to find their place are discovering talents they never knew they had. Students who felt discouraged by traditional academic challenges are finding new avenues for success and accomplishment. Educators report improved attendance, stronger engagement, and meaningful personal growth among participating students.

One student shared that even on days when academic success felt out of reach, time spent in the workshop gave him a sense of achievement and self-worth. Another student, newly empowered by his accomplishments, began helping his peers, growing into a leadership role within the program. These are not merely educational outcomes—they are life-changing moments that are helping shape brighter futures.

Currently serving approximately 130 students from Mesivta Oholei Torah, Mesivta Chovevei Torah, and Mesivta Bnei Aliya, the program is already exceeding expectations. Interest continues to grow as students request additional workshop time, schools seek expanded participation opportunities, and community members witness the transformative effect the program is having on young lives.

Rabbi Moshe Wiener, Executive Director of JCCGCI, emphasized the significance of the initiative. “This program is about far more than vocational training. It is about helping young people recognize their value, develop confidence, and discover pathways to success. When a student realizes that he is capable of building something meaningful with his own hands, it often changes how he sees himself and his future.”

JCCGCI’s ability to launch and administer this groundbreaking initiative was made possible through the generosity of an anonymous funder, who awarded a two-year, $225,000 grant to support the pilot program across the three participating Mesivtas in Crown Heights.

However, there is one critical condition: matching funds must be secured. This opportunity is about far more than sustaining an existing program. It is about expanding access for boys who can benefit from this pathway, helping students remain engaged in Yeshiva life, and equipping them with the skills, confidence, and sense of purpose needed to build productive futures, both spiritually and materially.

Every contribution brings us closer to meeting the matching requirement and expanding the program’s reach. With your support, we can serve more students, strengthen their connection to their education and community, and help ensure that they have the tools they need to succeed.

We respectfully invite you to partner with us, and to encourage others to do the same, as we work to fulfill the matching requirement and bring this life-changing opportunity to every boy who needs it.

JCCGCI extends its sincere gratitude to the participating schools, educators, supporters, and funders whose partnership has made this initiative possible. Together, they are helping young people build far more than projects—they are helping them build futures.
