A PLACE TO BELONG: INSIDE JCCGCI’S SEVEN OLDER ADULT CENTERS

Walk into any one of JCCGCI’s Older Adult Centers on a weekday morning, and you’ll find the same thing: a room full of life. Someone is calling out bingo numbers in one corner of the room while a dance class is warming up on the other. What one may expect to be a silent room of relaxation is actually a vibrant social space where old friends catch up, new bonds are made, and a real sense of community forms, where all of our members leave feeling seen and valued.

For over five decades, JCCGCI’s Older Adult Centers have existed on a simple premise: that growing older should never mean growing distant from your community. Isolation is one of the most serious and most under-discussed threats to healthy aging, and our seven centers scattered throughout Brooklyn were built to meet it head-on. But we’ve also learned that a welcoming social space is about more than just filling the hours. It’s about dignity. It’s about giving people a reason to get dressed and get out the door, a friendly face to greet them when they arrive, and a community that notices when they don’t show up.

Our older adults need more than a place to sit down with one another, they need a place that will keep each day exciting and inspire stronger bonds and deeper relationships. That’s why in a typical week at one of our sites, you can always find something you’re interested in. If you’re looking to stay fit, join us for tai chi, dancing, workout equipment, or chair yoga across our various centers. If the arts have always been your forte, you can find anything from painting to ceramics, crocheting, jewelry crafts, and many more. Whether you come to learn something new, stay active, explore a hobby, or simply spend time with friends, there is always another reason to come back the next day.

In order to meet the full range of needs of our older adults, however, our centers offer a wide range of services that make older adult life simpler and safer. All of our centers offer assistance with accessing and understanding entitlements and services, but each offers unique opportunities as well, ranging from nutrition classes to ESL courses, case assistance, emotional wellness groups, blood pressure screenings and more. Our older adult centers expand beyond being a place to unwind and connect, they are also a vital community resource that connects crucial services with those who need them.

Outside of regular programming, our centers host an array of special events that turn an ordinary afternoon into something our members can look forward to. This July at the Jay Harama Older Adult Center participants came together for a lively Independence Day celebration on July 8, followed up this month by the center’s Tropical Luau Party, keeping the festivities frequent throughout the year. At the Marien-Heim Older Adult Center, members marked Flag Day and Father’s Day with a celebration of their own, complete with live music, dancing, food, and memories that will last forever. Coming up in September at our Coney Island Seaside Older Adult Center is our Mid-Autumn Festival, which will be a fantastic celebration featuring music, singing, and dancing, performed by talented participants within our community. These events may each look different, but they share one mission to bring together our older adults and give them moments to remember.

“We want our members to have somewhere they are excited to come each day, where they can stay active, build friendships, try something new, and know that there are people who genuinely care about them,” says Grace Brandi, Managing Director of our Older Adult Centers.

Our Older Adult Centers are built around the ideas of community and belonging, and our activities, services, and events all cater to constructing an environment that turns a group into a family. Aging should not mean losing the excitement or sense of purpose that makes each day meaningful, and across our seven centers, JCCGCI works every day to make sure it doesn’t. More than a place to spend the day, our centers are a place to keep living fully, and most importantly, a place to belong.
