NATIONAL WELLNESS MONTH: HOW WELLNESS IS AT THE CORE OF JCCGCI’S MISSION

August marks National Wellness Month, a nationwide reminder to pause and prioritize the habits, resources, and support systems that help us live healthier, fuller lives. At JCCGCI, wellness has never been a seasonal conversation. It’s the foundation of nearly everything we do, whether that’s showing up for someone navigating a hard season, helping a neighbor build a more stable future, or simply making sure no one in our community has to face life’s challenges alone.
For over three decades, our organization has operated on a simple belief: that true wellness isn’t a single service or a single moment, it’s something built cumulatively, through consistency, trust, and a community that shows up for its own. A person’s wellbeing isn’t just measured by whether their immediate needs are met, it’s shaped by whether they feel seen, supported, and equipped to keep moving forward through life’s challenges. That belief is woven into the culture of JCCGCI, guiding not just what we do, but how we do it.
Wellness is so often discussed in terms of the physical: eating well, staying active, getting enough sleep, but true wellbeing cannot exist without mental health, and mental health cannot exist without addressing the barriers that keep people from feeling whole. For many of the people JCCGCI serves, unprocessed trauma is an invisible barrier, standing between them and the healthy, stable life they deserve. For others, it might be isolation, financial insecurity, or simply not knowing where to turn when life feels overwhelming. Wellness looks different for every person who walks through our doors, and meeting people where they are has always meant tailoring support to the full picture of a person’s life, not just their most visible need.
This is precisely why JCCGCI’s approach to wellness has never been confined to one department or one type of service. It shows up in the quiet, consistent work happening across our organization every day. Wellness at JCCGCI is not a single initiative, it’s a philosophy connecting our entire community.

One of the clearest examples of that philosophy in action is our Trauma Recovery Center, which brings mental health treatment and extensive support to survivors of violence and trauma right in the heart of Coney Island, meeting people where they are both geographically and emotionally. No one understands that mission more than Dr. Dulande Louis, who built the TRC from the ground up into the highly accomplished program it is today, dedicating her career to helping trauma survivors reclaim a sense of safety and self.
“Wellness isn’t only about how we feel on our best days, it’s about how we’re supported through our hardest ones,” says Dr. Dulande Louis, PhD, LCSW, Founding Director of JCCGCI’s Trauma Recovery Center. “Our job isn’t just to provide therapy, it’s to help remove every barrier standing between a survivor of trauma and their journey to healing.”

The TRC, however, is only one thread in a much larger fabric. It is a vivid example of a set of values that runs through every program that we offer. Wellness at JCCGCI isn’t confined to any one group; it’s reflected in the quiet reassurance we try to offer everyone who comes to us for help, whatever form that help may take. Some of that work looks like therapy and case management. Some of it looks like a phone call, a ride, a meal, or simply someone remembering your name. All of it is rooted in the same idea: that people deserve to be met with dignity, not just with services.
This National Wellness Month, we’re proud to recognize every member of our community who trusts JCCGCI with their wellbeing, and every staff member across our organization who shows up for them, day in and day out. Wellness isn’t a destination, it’s a practice built through small and consistent acts of everyday care rather than a single milestone. At JCCGCI, it’s a practice we’re honored to build together with our community, one person at a time.
