Home Delivered Meals

JCCGCI’s home delivered meals program serves seniors, 60 years or older, who are not able to prepare nutritious meals on their own, whether due to illness or handicap. It is a high level kosher program (glatt kosher), with rabbinic oversight of the kitchen. For those who keep kosher, it is a core element of their lives, and the ability to continue doing so despite their limitations is critical to their well-being. Home attendants rarely know how to purchase and prepare glatt kosher meals.

Most clients get seven meals, delivered five days a week with a chilled meal for Saturday and Sunday. Clients are given weekly menus on Friday, and the kitchen will adjust for client preferences to the extent possible. The program is extremely stable, with a very dedicated staff—in over a decade, there was only one day (the blizzard of 2011) when meals were not delivered to everyone—and even on that day we were able to reach some of our clients.

The program serves about 300 meals a day to individuals in the District 15 area; our four routes start at Avenue P and extend to Sheepshead Bay. We reach over 300 clients over the course of the year. The program provides more than meals—the delivery staff are the people who see the clients every day. They offer smiles and brief social contact, and may be the first ones to know that a client needs immediate medical help or other services that JCCGCI can provide or connect them with.
