TAKE CARE NEW YORK 2020 NEIGHBORHOOD HEALTH INITIATIVE
In fall 2015, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene released Take Care New York 2020 (TCNY 2020) outlining objectives for the city to achieve by the year 2020 to give everyone a chance to lead a healthier life. As a community partner, JCCGCI gathered community members to identify health issues most important to our neighborhoods. Together, we set a goal to decrease the number of adults who are obese by bringing Shape Up NYC Fitness Classes to Coney Island.
These classes, which are offered at various sites in the neighborhood, provide free exercise opportunities for people of all abilities. Participants can choose from light cardio and yoga, strength training for seniors or high intensity interval training. Shape Up NYC is a no-cost citywide fitness program offered by the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation.
JCCGCI also invites Coney Island residents to become volunteer fitness instructors for Shape Up NYC by registering for the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation’s 12 week fitness training program.
This program gives everyone the chance to lead a healthier life and facilitates the development of community-driven health improvement strategies in under-resourced neighborhoods across the city.
JCCGCI thanks the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) for funding that has made the program possible.
Exercising and keeping active are great ways to maintain a healthy weight and improve overall health. For more information, please contact our project coordinator, Beryl R. Williams at firstname.lastname@example.org.
