JUST ONE OF MANY
SUCCESS STORIES
When Polina came to the Jewish Community Council of
Greater Coney Island, she was unemployed, spoke very
little English and had a difficult family situation.
What others may have viewed as hopeless, the concerned
and dedicated staff of Vocational Support Systems considered
a challenge that could, with a little effort and patience,
be overcome. They placed Polina in the program’s
English as a Second Language class and a beginners’
computer class, and utilized their available resources
to improve her personal circumstances.
The staff members’ constant emotional support
gave their client the extra motivation to successfully
complete her courses. At the same time, they were able
to obtain camp scholarships for each of Polina’s
three children, allowing them to enjoy their summer
vacation and giving their mother the peace of mind she
needed to focus on her future.
When her counselors at Vocational Support Systems got
her an interview with Ohel / Bais Ezra / The Lifetime
Care Foundation for the Disabled, Polina was excited
– and anxious. Did she have what it takes to meet
the demands of her position? It wasn’t long before
she got her answer – a resounding yes. Starting
at the well-respected organization as a part-time counselor,
Polina went through a special on-site training course,
and soon afterwards was promoted to a full-time position
that boasted an excellent benefits plan.
Polina continues to express her gratitude to the caring
people at the JCCGCI and its Vocational Support Systems.
Thanks to their intervention, she now has a good command
of the English language, a satisfying and rewarding
job, and a stabilized, more peaceful home life. It’s
just one of many success stories – some might
say minor miracles – generated by Vocational Support
Systems. |
