JCCGCI offers two programs of friendly visiting. One program, Connect2, offers companionship and support to Holocaust survivors living throughout New York City. The other provides support for others who are homebound elderly. Both provide volunteers who visit for an hour once a week, assisting clients with shopping and organizing, exchanging stories, reading to them, and escorting them to doctors.
Connect2 offers a particularly vital service for Holocaust survivors, who may find an assisted living or nursing home environment with its rules and regulations to be traumatic. Our home visiting services provide respite from isolation and a means of recognizing and addressing the needs of survivors through direct services from JCCGCI or referrals to other providers.
Since Connect2 clients are not necessarily homebound, volunteers may go for walks with them. Volunteers, who are carefully matched to survivors, hear extraordinary stories, and learn courage and perseverance by living example. These inter-generational friendships ensure the past will not be forgotten. The program, which began in September 2001, has made thousands of friendly visits.

Friendly Visiting New York
JCCGCI also offers friendly visiting services to homebound seniors 60 and over who receive home-delivered Citymeals-on-Wheels. The program is appropriate for any such senior who is lonely, isolated, or requires someone to read for them, shop or escort them to doctors.
Many clients may have loss of vision or other physical difficulties that prevent them from getting around on their own, making it difficult for them to socialize. We try to limit their loneliness with weekly visits from caring volunteers, who provide homebound seniors a sense of connection to the outside world. We match seniors with volunteers by needs and preferences, such as finding someone who speaks a particular language, or someone who can play canasta with them.
We work closely with JCCGCI case management and other referring agencies. Caseworkers may see their clients twice a year and talk to them by phone every two months. A lot can happen in a senior’s life between those contacts, and our visitors make sure that caseworkers are kept informed of client concerns, incidents and emerging needs.
Since the inception of the program in 2005 we have made close to 500 matches between senior clients and volunteers. Currently we have approximately 100 different seniors receiving our service and our dedicated volunteers have spent 25,500 (and counting) hours visiting their senior friends. JCCGCI is the only Citymeals-funded program that services all of Brooklyn and parts of Queens.
