SENIOR CITIZEN TRANSPORTATION
& EDUCATION
Since 1981, the Jewish Community Council of Greater
Coney Island has been making daily life for older adults
in the local area a lot easier with its professionally
operated transportation program providing round-trip
service. Seniors are routinely picked up at their homes
by the Council bus and driven to essential destinations,
such as doctor’s appointments and other medical
sites. Moreover, the bus and its friendly driver play
frequent hosts to seniors on trips to tourist attractions,
cultural events and local shopping expeditions. All
of this makes life considerably easier for the seniors,
whether helping those who are frail to take care of
important personal matters outside the home, or giving
those whose lives have become constricted and isolated
the opportunity to expand their social network and sphere
of interests.
Recognizing the need to keep older adults informed about
matters that affect their well being, the JCC provides
educational workshops at senior centers and housing
developments throughout Coney Island, Brighton Beach
and Seagate. Experts in each field present comprehensive
discussions of issues that are of particular concern
to senior citizens, including crime and safety, health
and government benefits. Area seniors enthusiastically
attend these sessions and generally leave feeling that
they have an up-to-date understanding of the ongoing
issues that affect them and their community.
