Peer Tutoring Program

Children who struggle in school with basic skills often become frustrated with the school experience and may even drop out of school. In todays crowded classroom, teachers cannot give individual attention to each student. Some need more time and practice to become competent readers and proficient in other basic skills.

Peer Tutoring Program has successfully affected after school programming in Coney Islands Public Schools (PS 329, 188, and 288) since 1996. The program provides elementary school students with homework assistance and tutoring by intermediate school students under the supervision of licensed teachers.

The tutors are trained to give the youngsters encouragement and immediate corrective feedback as they practice their reading and math skills.

The youngsters benefit from the help afforded to them, and enjoy the attention they receive from the teenagers. The intermediate school students, in turn, develop mentoring and leadership skills which improve their self confidence and school achievement. This program earns high ratings throughout all participating schools.

Operated by the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island, the Peer Tutoring Program is funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).
